Parts of a Hookah – Summary

Five or six parts of a hookah play a major role in it operating properly. To use a hookah and get the best experience possible these parts will all be a part of the hookah you use. This is a summary of those parts.

The Bowl

This is where you place the tobacco. The bowl will likely be located near the top of the hookah and is a container made with clay or marble (sometimes a different material) which you place the tobacco and coal in. some people will use tin foil (with slit holes) or a screen to separate the tobacco and coal to make sure the coal ashes inhaled is minimized.

Hose

This is a thin tube which is used to inhale the smoke from. The end of the hose will have a mouthpiece connected to it. Usually mouthpieces are made of metal, plastic, or wood. The shapes and designs of mouthpieces will vary by hookah and can be customized.

Body

The hookah body consists of a hollow tube which connects to a gasket at the bottom. There may also be a container at the top of the body to place ice in to further cool the smoke down.

Gasket

This is where the hoses connect to. There will be at least one opening for a hose to connect into. There may be multiple openings for multiple hoses to be used. There may also be another opening for a valve to clear smoke out of the water jar so you don’t have to clear it all out through a hose.

Water Jar

The water jar is used to filter the smoke through water in order to cool it down and make it smoother. You can use water, alcohol, spirit juice, fruit juice, and other liquids in the water jar. To further cool down the smoke you could put ice in the water jar instead.

Plate

An ash tray is located underneath the bowl to catch burnt out coals from prior hookah sessions.

Grommets

These are used to connect various parts of the hookah and make sure there is a tight seal so no smoke escapes. By having grommets in the hookah it will get as much of the smoke as possible to go through the hose. Some people will use tape or paper instead of traditional grommets but it’s your decision.
