The substance you choose to smoke in a hookah doesn’t have to be fully dry. The most used substance in a hookah (usually called Tobamel or Maassel) contains tobacco and a sweetener like honey or molasses. In the past tobacco would be mixed together with a sweeter to create Jurak which is an unflavored tobacco mixture that’s moist.

Many people will also used flavored shisha tobacco. In the eighties this started to become popular as tobacco manufacturers in Egypt started to test making fruit flavored tobacco to market towards female smokers. Now you can find fruit flavored shisha tobacco and many other flavors as well at various hookah shops. Almost anything can be found in a flavor including blueberry, chocolate, cappuccino, vanilla, bubblegum, coconut, and hundreds of other flavors.

For those who don’t want to have any nicotine in their hookah smoking substance there is tobacco free herbal mixtures which contain molasses as a sweetener. While these may not taste the same as other types of tobacco you can get this product in various flavors as well.

The choice of what substance to use in your hookah is totally up to you and is mainly based on what taste you enjoy the most. If you want to keep your hookah smoking as healthy as possibly you may want to avoid nicotine and tar though.
