Health Risks from Using a Hookah
The hookah was originally designed by a man in India with the intent to make inhaling tobacco smoke healthier through creating a water filtration system within the hookah. Sadly a hookah doesn’t really make smoking tobacco any healthier than it is when you inhale tobacco smoke directly from a cigarette.
Health Risks
The main concern would probably be the amount of tobacco smoke you are exposed to. When smoking with a hookah the water filtration system doesn’t actually successfully filter the toxic contents like carbon monoxide and other carcinogens. It’s just as much a health risk for you to smoke a cigarette as it is to smoke it in a hookah. One study showed that in a hookah session lasting an hour the participants were exposed to 100-200 times the amount of tobacco smoke that is inhaled from one normal cigarette.
All the addictive and harmful ingredients found in tobacco are still inhaled with a hookah so you won’t be making smoking any healthier. With the chance of inhaling a lot more smoke than when smoking cigarettes you could probably just be making it unhealthier. There are still perks to using a hookah but they don’t relate to the health effects.
