What is a Hookah?
A hookah is a smoking device, a type of water pipe, which can be used to smoke marijuana, tobacco, and other products. The design of a hookah may vary depending on culture but in general they are all created the same way. Most hookahs are tall and consist of one or more stems. The bottom of a hookah is usually made of glass but can vary by design and price. Hookahs work through indirect heat and filtering through water.
History
The hookah was originally created in India briefly after tobacco was presented to the country. The man who invented the hookah wanted to make the smoke filter through the water so it is more pure and less harmful when inhaled. Not too long after being invented the hookah water pipe gained a lot of popularity in India and soon all across the world.
Even though there are claims that it’s healthier to use a hookah than to smoke a cigarette directly they are not true. The tobacco is just as toxic in a hookah as it is when smoked directly. People using a hookah will also end up inhaling more tobacco smoke on average than those who just smoke cigarettes.
The idea behind the hookah was that the smoke would go through the water and filter out the harmful contents but this doesn’t happen. A study was completed by the World Health Organization and the results were shocking. The group claimed that in a sixty minute sitting while smoking from a hookah the smoker was exposed to almost two hundred times the amount of tobacco smoke in a single cigarette. A hookah won’t make smoking any healthier so that’s not the main reason to purchase one.
