Hookahs in Germany

Hookah is most commonly referred to as “shisha” or “wasserpfeife” in Germany and is a very popular product. The term “hookah” is not used at all in Germany. The popularity of the hookah or shisha in Germany has gone through an exponential growth in recent years.

Popularity

The popularity of hookahs has skyrockets and especially so in larger cities like Berlin and Cologne. In bigger cities there are many hookah bars/cafes open to the general public. There are many shops which sell hookahs and other water pipes as well in Germany. You can also purchase other hookah related products like flavored tobacco and charcoal at these hookah shops.

With the over saturation of hookah businesses in Germany you could easily afford to buy your own hookah and have all the equipment you need. With the cheap prices of hookahs and equipment it has resulted in many young adults and teenagers owning their own hookahs as well.

In Eastern Germany there is also a booming popularity for hookahs due to the Turkish population in that area. However the population of Turkish immigrants in East Germany is not that large and ultimately the younger generations are starting to get interested in hookahs too.

Now hookahs are becoming so popular that even in cities with less than one hundred thousand people there are hookah bars. Instead of hookahs being used by tradition, culture, and ethnic backgrounds, hookahs are starting to be used by everyone now and are just as popular as bongs for marijuana.
