Hookah Bars in the United States
While hookah bars have been open for centuries in various countries in the Middle East that was not the case for anywhere in North America. Hookah bars are relatively new in the United States but are gaining popularity still.
The first hookah bars to open in the United States were opened by immigrants and most were located in either Los Angeles or New York City. The immigrants who opened the hookah lounges at the time were usually from the Middle East. However now hookah lounges are opened by businessmen as an investment instead of just those with cultural ties.
A lot of hookah cafes in the United States have intriguing designs with glass tables, large plasma televisions, oxygen bars, and various other entertaining features. Usually you have to be 14 years old to smoke hookah and 18 years old to buy it but this will vary by state.
The popularity of hookah in the United States is still rising and there continues to be an increase of hookah bars in the United States every year. The anti-tobacco law has hurt the economy in hookah bars but there are still hookah lounges which supply herbal shisha that doesn’t contain any tobacco. It’s a very small percent of the American population that are really informed about hookah and there is definitely a lot of room for expanding and marketing hookah cafes to the whole country.
